How to Thread a Brother Sewing Machine

Did you buy yourself a brother sewing machine?

That’s splendid! If you are a newbie in handling a sewing machine, then we are at your service. You could be unfamiliar with the sewing tool. And, we are aware that threading a specific machine is one of the tricky parts while learning to sew.

Here you will get detailed instruction set to carry out the upper and lower threading on your new machine.

Essentials for Threading the Machine

You will mainly encounter spool pin, thread guides, presser foot, and handwheel while threading a brother sewing machine.

The complete threading of the sewing machine is a combination of three activities, such as- loading the bobbin, installing the bobbin, and threading the machine. By threading, we mean to thread both top and bottom parts of the machine because you know that the sewing machines require two sources of thread to form stitches successfully.

The Upper Threading

In technical terms, threading the machine on the top is called upper threading. Before expounding how to perform the upper threading, let us tell you, be mindful while working out the upper threading. If it’s done incorrectly, then you will face sewing problems. Also, the needle could snap at some point.

Manufacturers recommend not to use a thread weight of more or less than 20. Also, make sure to use the needle and thread in the correct sequence. Let’s get to work-

First stage

Be sure to turn off your machine. Now, lift the pressure foot lever. This will support the thread to pass between the tension discs. Then, spin the handwheel counterclockwise to raise the needle. If the needle is not properly raised, you won’t be able to thread the machine.

Second stage

Now, pull the spool pin upward and take out the cap from the spool. After that, slide the thread in the spool pin and put the cap back in the spool pin. If the spool of thread is set improperly, the thread will get tangled on the spool pin and break the needle.

Third stage

It’s time to feed the thread. You must have already noticed some directions imprinted on the body of the machine. They will help you to navigate. Get ready to complete the upcoming steps by following the diagrams and directions on the machine.

Step 1

Looking at the depictions, pull out the thread to the right side of the machine from the spool pin. Now, take the thread through the thread guide located on the presser regulating the thumb bar.

After that, carry the thread around the take-up lever and tug it downward. If necessary, lower the thread-lever so that you can wrap the thread around the thread take-up lever.

Step 2

You will find an illustration right beside the presser regulating the thumb bar. From here, it will direct you through some numberings.

Now, by following number 1 written on the machine, take the thread through the thread guide. You will see number 2 when you proceed to take the thread through the thread guide.

Then, you will notice number 3; an arrow will indicate you to take the thread around and pull it upward.

Step 3

After pulling the thread upward, you will find number 4. Now, you have to regulate the thread take-up lever with the handwheel to hook the thread on it.

Then following number 5, you have to take the thread downward again.

Step 4

In your one hand, take a little extra thread and pass the thread through the needle bar thread guide.

Tip: Once the thread is in, the thread guide cut it a little bit for a fresh end.

Now, put the thread in the needle’s eye and pull it through. You should let the presser foot down if it seems to get in the way of taking the thread through the needle’s eye.

That’s the end of the upper threading.

The Lower Threading

Some machines have a top-loading bobbin, and some have a front-loading bobbin. If the bobbin case is right under the presser foot and you can see it from the top, then your machine has a top-loading bobbin. On the contrary, if you can’t see the bobbin, then it must be a front-loading bobbin.

Loading the bobbin

First, pull up the spool pin and insert the thread into the pin. Again, there will be few illustrations to help you to draw the thread properly.

As the images direct, pull the thread and place it into the guide. After that, loop it around the presser bar and pull it back to the side of the spool pin.

Take a closer look at the bobbin; there you will find a couple of holes. Next, take the thread through one of the holes. While placing the bobbin, you should keep the side with thread on the top.

Make sure the thread is hanging a minimum of 4 inches through the hole of the bobbin. Now, place the bobbin into the bobbin winder and push it over to the bobbin loader.

Now, your machine is set to load the bobbin. Turn the machine on; press the foot paddle to fill the bobbin. When the bobbin is fully loaded, cut the thread then remove it from the loader.

Part 2: Installing the bobbin

To start, lift the presser foot and uncover the bobbin case. Now, slide the bobbin into the case by keeping the end of the thread outside by 4-5 inches.

Once again, there will be directions engraved on the bobbin plate. Your thread should go into the groove of the bobbin plate. Finally, lead the end of the thread through the groove as it directs.

Conclusion

This guide can also aid you to thread some of the recent models of Bother sewing machine along with the sewing and quilting machines manufactured by this company.

And, with the help of this guide, we are sure you will make some nice dresses by incorporating beautiful designs.

Enjoy stitching!
