This is the second most popular sewing machine for kids. This machine is not as advanced as the previous one in features but is still a favorite sewing machine among kids. It has ten built-in stitches, a 4-step buttonhole, and a side-loading bobbin.

Cons:

4-step buttonhole and side loading bobbin are not easy to handle, especially for kids. The Even interesting fact is that the current price difference between LS2125i and XL2600I is very less.

So everyone chooses XL2600I over this one. Better pricing would have made it more competitive.

14. Brother XL2600I

It is more of a beginner’s machine than a kid’s machine. I included XL2600I on this list because of its quality and ease of use.

You can’t get a better machine for this price. If your kid is a fast learner, this machine will provide enough room for creativity. It has 25 built-in stitches, a one-step buttonhole, automatic needle threader, drop-in bobbin, etc.

Even better, the thing is that if your kid gets used to these advanced features in the early stage of sewing, it will be much easier for them to switch over to advanced sewing.

The stitch quality is excellent. The machine is not made of cheap plastic; the build quality is quite good.

This machine can deal with rough handling; take my word for it. Some might consider this machine a little bit too much (in features) for kids, but if you are serious about teaching your kid, Brother XL2600I is a step in the right direction. It has been the best seller for quite some time now.

Cons:

No major issues.

15. Janome Sew Mini 2-Stitch Sewing Machine

Janome Sew Mini is a two stitch sewing machine. It has a top-loading bobbin for easy bobbin changing. It doesn’t pack many features like Brother XL2600I or Purple Thunder, but still, it is a decent machine. It is affordable, as well.

Cons:

Not good with denim. The machine is loud, as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the right age for a child to use a sewing machine?

Even though many experts believe that kids can start using a sewing machine as young as three years, an ideal age to start would be six years because, at that age, kids would understand the safety measures well.

There are many good books on sewing beginners for kids to refer to and develop some necessary skills and enhance their creativity. By the time a kid is eight years old, you can expect to be more responsible in handling the sewing machine.

2. What are some of the most manageable sewing tasks for kids?

For kids who are just getting started with sewing, it is always wise to start the most straightforward tasks, and some of the easiest things to try on a sewing machine as a beginner are:

  • Pillowcase Skirt
  • Birthday Banner
  • Library Tote Bag
  • Ipad Sleeve
  • Jumbo Receiving Blankets
  • T-Shirt Upcycle to Nightgown
  • Easy Drawstring Bag
3. How much should one ideally spend on a sewing machine for a kid?

It’s wise to choose easy-to-use sewing machines for kids, such as some of the basic Singer or Brother sewing machines. You can buy good sewing machines for kids for as low as $50.

However, you must also ensure that the sewing machine that you choose has the most useful features for your kid. One useful feature to look for is the automatic needle threader.

4. What are some ways to improve your child’s sewing skills?

Children can quickly end up being frustrated while things are unnecessarily uncomplicated, and this is why you have to ensure that you do your best to keep things simple for them.

At the same time, you must encourage them to improve their skills and creativity. Here are a few excellent ways to improve your kid’s sewing skills:

  • Assign them tasks that match their abilities
  • Create a fun project for your kid to keep on motivated
  • Provide kids with step by step guide for every task
  • Explain their mistakes and help them learn from them
  • Make the most out of the best sewing machines books
  • Understand your child’s mindset and help one in being more creative
5. How to choose the right sewing machine for kids?

While choosing a sewing machine for a kid, one crucial factor is undoubtedly eased of use. However, you have to ensure the machine that you choose has all the required features alongside being simple to use. Features such as an automatic needle threader and free arm can make things ridiculously convenient and creative for your kid.

It is always wise to choose a reliable brand so that the machine works smoothly over a long period. Besides, when teaching sewing to kids, parents don’t usually have a dedicated sewing room for that, and most parents prefer to have their kids practice sewing within a limited space. That’s why you must also ensure that the sewing machine that you choose is portable enough.

Are You Looking For Sewing Machines For Kids? Here’s What You Need to Consider

A beautiful kid with sewing machinePedal

A machine with a foot pedal is much preferable. Most machines have both foot pedal and hand switch for starting the operation. You must make sure that the foot pedal is strong enough for handling by children.

Speed Control

Speed control is essential to ensure safety. It is good for beginners to use a slow speed. You must choose a machine with sliding speed control, which is easier for children to operate. They can graduate to the foot pedal operation slowly.

Weight

Kids don’t like to sit in one place. You must buy a sewing machine that can be easily carried by your kids. Most of the machines that we have selected are easy for kids to carry. This helps them to sit wherever they are most comfortable with their sewing work.

Cost

There are machines of all price levels. The price will change with the features. Going for a very low-priced machine may not give the features your child will need when they progress. Go for something affordable but with interesting features.

You must expect to pay more for popular brands like Singer or Janome. But then they will have better features and last longer too. The after-sales support from these companies will also be better.

Though lower priced ones are also on the list, you may look at the $30-70 range with the best available features. Fix your budget first and see which one is best for your children.

Safety

When it concerns kids, safety must be of top consideration — features like dual speed and drop-in bobbin help improve safety while stitching. The drop-in bobbins have metal frames and can hold thread, avoiding the need for frequent replacement.

Ease of stitching

Simple features make it easy for the kids to begin stitching. They are not overwhelmed by the sight of so many features. But ensure to include features that they will need as they progress into bigger projects.

A built-in needle threader is a good feature to have so that kids don’t have to worry about needing the thread and have more fun with their stitching or craft.

Amazing looks

Some machines come in beautiful and bright colors. There are also those with interchangeable faceplates having different cartoon characters. These are more liked by kids and will enrich their sewing experience.

One more piece of advice, please don’t even think of buying low-cost machines, you will end up wasting your money.

So please stay away from them. I hope this list will help you make a better decision.
